Cannabinoids are a class of compounds originally found in the Cannabis genus of flowering plants in the family Cannabaceae (the plant is commonly known as hemp). The chemical structure of an individual cannabinoid was first identified in 1940. There are at least 144 different cannabinoids isolated from cannabis, exhibiting varied effects. The classical cannabinoids are concentrated in a viscous resin produced in structures known as glandular trichomes.
